Established 1899 (David Alan and Charles Alexander Stevenson). White tower 23m The Flannan Isles are a group of uninhabited rocks and islets 28 miles west of Aird Lamishader. They were the scene of the still unexplained disappearance of all the lighthouse keepers in 1900, the year after the light was established. no image available from Michael Image available at Northern Lighthouse Board's website, copyright the Northern Lighthouse board. Other fixed structures (and many buoys) in the Sound of Harris (except for the delightfully-named Drowning Rock) are related to the ferry route from Leverburgh to Berneray. The direction of buoyage changes as this route crosses the Cope Channel, so that from Leverburgh to Sgeir Chruaidh red beacons are to starboard, and from the Cabbage Group to Berneray they are to port. The Cope Channel is therefore taken as the boundary between Sections S and T. Onastic lights: | ||

![]() Lantern blanked except for a few degrees each side of the marked leading line through the Outer Stromay Channel. This line is now marked by day only as a transit with the Beacon in line with a structure on Sgeir Volinish. One panel at the rear of the lantern was left unobscured, presumably so that the light could be monitored from the harbour. Dates of construction and use unknown. Eilean a' Charnain (Jane's Tower) G Q2/5, 6m, 4 miles NG006859 |
Isolated rock Lantern mounted on top of solar panel assembly, perhaps 1m. The assembly is fixed to the rock at ground level. The Admiralty's quoted elevation of 6m is decidedly optimistic, about 2m being probably excessive. The tower is a crumbling square concrete structure painted green with white bands. It obscures the light over a small angle from the SW. images LR18; EX455; CH2802, 2841 |
